Job Title: Environmental Coordinator
Reports To: Executive Director
Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Environmental Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the environmental stewardship and sustainability efforts within the traditional territory of Matachewan First Nation. This position supports environmental monitoring, sampling, compliance, and community projects while respecting Indigenous values and traditional knowledge. Working with the Lands and Energy Department, the Environmental Coordinator will support and participate in ongoing community projects by conducting environmental assessments, collecting samples, reviewing documents, managing data and records, engaging with the Matachewan First Nation (MFN) community, and participating in resource management consultations. The role also includes policy development, community education, and collaboration on various environmental and cultural initiatives across traditional lands.
Term: Permanent, Full-Time
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday 8:30AM – 4:30PM, with flexibility to work on weekends and evenings
Location: Matachewan First Nation and surrounding areas
Compensation: $60,000 - $80,000 annually
Benefits: Employer-paid benefits package and enrollment in pension plan
Start Date: As soon as possible
Areas of Responsibility
- Prepare technical reports by compiling, analyzing, and interpreting environmental data, ensuring accuracy, regulatory compliance, and clear communication that reflects Indigenous values, respect for the land, and responsible stewardship.
- Review and understand of various types of technical documents including archeological reports, and environmental assessments.
- Conduct fieldwork activities, including environmental monitoring, inspections, sampling, and data collection.
- Liaison with various stakeholders and project teams.
- Support meaningful community engagement and information sharing by communicating project activities, findings, and environmental information in a clear, respectful, and accessible manner.
- Perform regular environmental assessments—including water, air, and soil monitoring—and collect samples in line with applicable regulations and internal procedures.
- Implement environmental management plans and related procedures.
- Develop and maintain relationships with the environmental industry and Crown agencies.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date environmental records and databases.
- Collect and manage First Nation values and work with traditional knowledge.
- Create environmental related policies.
- Participate in all environmental resource management and development consultation sessions.
- Collaborate with Lands & Resources colleagues in various projects.
- Conduct workshops and information sessions for all MFN band members.
- Participate in environmental related trainings and conferences.
- Other related duties as requested by the ED.
Requirements
- College diploma or university degree in environmental field is preferred.
- Mapping knowledge is considered an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
- Able to work methodically and accurately, with attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Comfortable working outdoors in any weather conditions.
- Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License.
- Acceptable recent Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check.
